On a bright, sunny day, when you’re outside engaged in various activities, it is essential to consider the impact of prolonged sun exposure on our skin.
While sunscreen is a go-to solution, have you ever thought about the role your clothing plays in sun protection? Some clothing protects skin better than others. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50+ is the gold standard rating in sun-protective clothing. Read on to learn about the science behind UPF 50+, explore its significance, and understand why it's a game-changer for sun safety.
UPF Rating Explained
UPF is a numerical rating that indicates how effectively a fabric blocks Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Similar to Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in sunscreen, UPF is an indication of how much a fabric will protect you against harmful UV radiation. The higher the UPF rating, the greater the protection.
UPF 50+ is the highest possible rating for a fabric. To achieve this rating, the fabric must block at least 98%-100% of UV radiation. Lower-rated UPF clothing is less effective at blocking UV radiation, thus letting more of the UV radiation through the fabric and onto your skin. This sun exposure through the fabric can damage your skin.
What Sets UPF Clothing Apart?
When it comes to safeguarding your skin from the sun, not all clothing is created equal. UPF clothing is specially designed to provide enhanced protection against the sun's harmful UV rays. Unlike regular clothing, Certified UPF clothing undergoes rigorous testing to determine its level of UV protection.
For example, a regular cotton t-shirt is rated only UPF 6, meaning 1/6th (or 17%) of the sun’s UV radiation can penetrate through the fabric and damage your skin. A UPF 30 rating allows only 3% of the sun’s radiation to penetrate, thus protecting you against 97% of the sun’s UV radiation. The gold standard is UPF 50+ which blocks up to 100% of UV radiation and is the ideal protection for at-risk people who want to stay protected from both UV rays.
UPF Testing and Certification
Before a garment can boast a UPF rating, it goes thorough testing to evaluate its UV-blocking capabilities. This testing considers factors such as the fabric type, color, construction, and weight. Once it is evaluated, it receives a UPF rating, informing consumers of its sun-protective properties.
The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorants (AATCC) has a standard test method, known as TM 183, which evaluates transmittance or blocking of UV radiation through fabric. Belesun fabrics are evaluated against this test method in order to receive its Certified UPF 50+ rating. Belesun fabric also has AATCC certifications for colorfast, moisture wicking, antibacterial and 4-way stretch. (In addition, Belesun fabric is also certified by the global OEKO TEX Std 100 label, meaning it has undergone rigorous testing for harmful substances to protect your health.)
In contrast to regular clothing, which may provide some level of protection but often allows significant UV penetration, UPF clothing is specifically designed to act as a barrier against the sun's harmful rays. When the clothing has certifications in the labeling, such as Certified UPF 50+ the clothing will provide the highest level of protection.
